Comptroller, Dearborn Heights

The City of Dearborn Heights, MI (Pop. 63,292) is seeking a seasoned municipal finance professional to join the administrative team of Mayor Bill Bazzi, who was elected to his first four-year term in November 2021. This position is ideal for a professional who is committed to making a difference. The comptroller/ executive finance director will play a key role in the continuing revitalization of the city and will have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate leadership and innovation in concert with other like-minded professionals. 

Dearborn Heights is a mid-sized, inner-ring suburb of Detroit, located in the heart of Wayne County, approximately 12 miles west of the Motor City’s downtown. It is a safe, family-oriented residential community that shares borders with several communities, including Detroit, Redford, Westland, Garden City, Inkster, Inkster, Taylor, Allen Park, and Dearborn. Over the last several decades, the city, along with neighboring Dearborn, has become a center for individuals and families of Middle Eastern and North African descent. 

Its location in Metro Detroit offers Dearborn Heights residents access to a broad range of amenities, including highly rated colleges and universities, healthcare facilities, professional sports venues, cultural arts and enrichment opportunities, places of worship, and a robust and varied array of restaurant/dining options. There are also excellent transportation providers, including Dearborn’s John Dingell (Amtrak) Railway Station and Romulus’ Detroit Metropolitan (international) Airport. The city is also a reasonable commute to most manufacturing centers and commerce parks throughout Southeast Michigan. 

The city’s comptroller/ executive finance director is a key department head position that oversees and directs all major financial proceedings, including general accounting services, payroll administration, the annual budget, and audit preparation. The position is a mayoral appointment reporting to Mayor Bazzi. 

A bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, accounting, or a related field is required, and a minimum of five years of municipal fiscal management experience is strongly preferred. A CPA credential is highly desirable. The starting salary for the position is budgeted at $115,000 annually, with a higher salary range currently under review.
